• FILETYPER is an application program that you can place anywhere on your hard disk. I like to keep it on the desktop just above the trash.
• FILETYPER MENU is a control panel that adds a “FileTyper…” item to the Finder’s File menu. If you want this feature, drag FileTyper Menu on your System Folder and let the Finder put it into the Control Panels folder, then restart. NOTE: This control panel is not compatible with Apple’s Thread Manager or with System 7.5. If you use either of these, you should not install FileTyper Menu.
• FILETYPER FOR SYSTEM 6 is a version for System 6 users. It will only run under System 6.
• FILETYPER FOLDER contains optional files for FileTyper to use. This folder should be installed in your System Folder or your Preferences Folder if you want any of the capabilities these files offer. The files in this folder include…
• FILETYPER 4.2 PREFS saves preferences for FileTyper. If it isn’t available, you can still change preferences, but they will revert back to the default when FileTyper quits.
• FILETYPER 4.2 HELP contains balloon help information for FileTyper. If you want balloon help, this file should be present.
• FILETYPER POP-UPS contains customizable pop-up menus for types and creators. If you want pop-up menus to be available, this file should be present.
2) Is there anything special I need to do if I’m upgrading from an earlier version?
• VERSION 3.x USERS: FileTyper versions 4.0 and later now come with a FileTyper Folder, which should be placed in your System Folder or your Preferences Folder. This folder contains files that are not required, but are helpful for FileTyper to operate: the help file, which contains balloon help information; the preferences file, which contains saved preferences; and the popups file, which contains popup type and creator menus. The old version 3.x help extension and preferences file (which should be in the Extensions and Preferences folders, respectively) are no longer needed and can be thrown away.
• VERSION 4.0 USERS: You will need to replace the entire old FileTyper Folder with the new one included in this package, as all the files have been changed. Note that, in FileTyper 4.2, the FileTyper Folder can be located in either the System Folder or the Preferences Folder. If you want to keep your custom pop-up menus, use ResEdit to copy them from the old help file and paste them into the new “FileTyper Pop-ups” file. If your are updating FileTyper Menu from version 4.0 to version 4.1, be sure to remove the old Control Panel. FileTyper Menu may behave strangely if two copies are installed at once.
• VERSION 4.1.x USERS: The prefs and help files have been changed in this version of FileTyper. You will need to replace the prefs and help files in your FileTyper Folder with the new ones in this package. You can keep your old pop-ups file. Note that, in FileTyper 4.2, the FileTyper Folder can be located in either the System Folder or the Preferences Folder.
• VERSION 4.2 USERS: The major change has been to AutoTypers; however, minor changes have been made to the FileTyper and MakeAutoTyper applications. You should replace your copies of the FileTyper and MakeAutoTyper applications with the new version, and use your new MakeAutoTyper to update your existing AutoTypers. You do not need to touch your FileTyper Folder.
• VERSION 4.2.1 USERS: You should replace your copies of the FileTyper and MakeAutoTyper applications with the new ones in this package. Nothing else has changed.
